Botswana is one of the most popular safari destinations in Africa. Visitors on this tour will get to experience the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Okavango Delta as the first stop. This amazingly scenic and diverse area receives a large inundation of water each year, creating beautiful water channels and Islands that a myriad of animals call their home. Even when the area is in drier months, this spectacular location is known for incredible game viewing. The second stop occurs in the Selinda Spillway in the Northern part of the country. The spillway offers great game viewing opportunities along this water channel which almost always has water in it, and is well known for having a particularly large concentration of elephants.
Track Big 5 in the Okavango Delta
The Big 5—rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, and buffalo—are at the top of every first-time safari-goer’s must-see list in Botswana. In places like Moremi and the Okavango Delta, you’re likely to encounter all of these iconic animals.
The Unrivaled Density of the Selinda Spilway
In Botswana’s private Selinda Reserve, the sheer density of wildlife is what leaves the deepest impression. Here, enormous herds of elephant and buffalo move through the wetlands, shadowed by formidable prides of lion and the region’s renowned wild dogs, all thriving along the banks of the Selinda Spillway.
Water Safaris in the Delta
Traditionally, the Okavango Delta was navigated using mekoro, canoes carved from hollowed-out sausage tree trunks. Today, nearly all lodges use lighter, faster, and more eco-friendly fiberglass canoes. A ride in a mokoro offers one of the most tranquil experiences imaginable: as you glide quietly along, your guide will point out stunning lilies, tiny painted reed frogs, and majestic goliath herons.
