Bandhavgarh was the former hunting preserve of the Maharaja of Rewa. White Tigers, now a major attraction around the world’s zoos, were first discovered in Rewa, not far from here. The terrain is broken, with rocky hill ranges, running roughly east to west, interspersed with grassy swamps and forested valleys.
The vegetation is chiefly Sal Forest in the valleys and on the lower slopes, gradually changing to mixed deciduous forests on the hills and in the hotter drier areas of the park in the south and the west. The wide valleys along the streams have long linear grasslands flanked by Sal Forests. These together provide Bandhavgarh with its rich diversity.

Darren Donovan was always drawn to wildlife. Growing up in the city meant he had little chance to experience it firsthand, but that never stopped him. He spent hours watching wildlife documentaries on television, captivated by the spectacle of the natural world and dreaming of being part of it one day.
When his father gifted him his first bird book on his eighth birthday, Darren couldn’t contain his excitement. He became so intrigued by birdlife, he would never leave his house without his trusty birdbook, curious to spot every species he could find.
Years later, that same curiosity led him to South Africa’s Sabi Sands, where he began his guiding career. It was there that he became fascinated by lion behavior. He still recalls one pride vividly that transformed within days of losing its matriarch. Just three days after her death, they hunted a buffalo for the first time. Watching them adapt so instinctively to survive changed something in him. That moment, he says, was when he truly understood the power of the wild.
For over 13 years, Darren lived in the bush, working in some of South Africa’s most renowned lodges. Inspired by the wildlife documentaries of his childhood, he picked up a camera, wanting to capture the same emotion and wonder he once felt on screen.
But for Darren, photography became more than just an artform. It became a tool to connect with people. “It’s more about the people than the photography,” he says. Over two decades in the wild have taught him that the real joy lies in helping others see nature differently. Teaching guests how to observe a subject, anticipate the right moment, and feel that connection before pressing the shutter – it never gets old.
“Photography is my skillset but I use my skillset to empower people to think differently about the natural world”, says Darren, whose conviction and respect for the wild have made him one of the most sought-after guides in the industry.
