A photo odyssey with Sara Jenner

I travel across the globe in search of wild and remote places, and have spent many months volunteering for wildlife conservation projects to help endangered species. My love for wildlife and the great outdoors has taken me to all seven continents. Over the past decade, I have travelled extensively in the polar regions as an Expedition Leader in small vessels in the High Arctic, Antarctica, and Sub Antarctic Islands.

As a photographic guide in the heart of Botswana, the enchanting realms of East Africa, and the mystical landscapes of India, I truly lead a life of two wondrous halves.

SARA JENNER,
Photographer & Private Guide

I am a guide, wildlife photographer, and writer. I live in East Cape, South Africa. I am an enthusiastic lover of nature, and have travelled widely in Africa and abroad for wildlife. I spent 12 years guiding full-time in Botswana. Today, I lead small groups of travellers on special interest photographic safaris. Some of my favourite countries to spend time in are- Botswana, India, and Kenya.

I enjoy all forms of nature photography. I firmly believe that knowing your subject’s behaviour helps get good results when it comes to wildlife photography. I shoot with Canon, but am familiar with Nikon and Sony cameras as well. I process my images using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, and assist photographers travelling with me using these programs.

I shoot a variety of wildlife related subject matter with big cats and wild dogs being amongst my favourites. My images have been on the cover of both Africa Geographic and the US National Geographic Kids magazine. I am regular contributor of text and images to African Birdlife magazine.

My tête-à-tête with wildlife began quite serendipitously in 1996.

As a Naturalist, I mastered tracking tigers in national parks of India like Jim Corbett, Kaziranga, Dudhwa, and Central India’s Kanha and Bandhavgarh, among others.

Going beyond tiger loyalism, I segued into Rajasthan, Gujrat, national parks in South India, and Sri Lanka, guiding wildlife and cultural tours.

Cloistered from the city hullabaloo, I had the honor of working with Sir David Attenborough and Nigel Marvin on award-winning international films like- Tiger: Spy in the Jungle (BBC), Lost Land of the Tiger (BBC), Life of Mammals (BBC), Warriors of the Monkey God (BBC), and Monkey Thieves (Nat Geo). I have assisted acclaimed photographers like Steve Winter and Jonathan Scott with logistics, permits, and location management for film shoots.

27 years into the wild, and it feels like the odyssey has just begun.

Digpal,
Private Guide & Naturalist

Darren Donovan was always drawn to wildlife. Growing up in the city meant he had little chance to experience it firsthand, but that never stopped him. He spent hours watching wildlife documentaries on television, captivated by the spectacle of the natural world and dreaming of being part of it one day.

When his father gifted him his first bird book on his eighth birthday, Darren couldn’t contain his excitement. He became so intrigued by birdlife, he would never leave his house without his trusty birdbook, curious to spot every species he could find.

Years later, that same curiosity led him to South Africa’s Sabi Sands, where he began his guiding career. It was there that he became fascinated by lion behavior. He still recalls one pride vividly that transformed within days of losing its matriarch. Just three days after her death, they hunted a buffalo for the first time. Watching them adapt so instinctively to survive changed something in him. That moment, he says, was when he truly understood the power of the wild.

For over 13 years, Darren lived in the bush, working in some of South Africa’s most renowned lodges. Inspired by the wildlife documentaries of his childhood, he picked up a camera, wanting to capture the same emotion and wonder he once felt on screen.

But for Darren, photography became more than just an artform. It became a tool to connect with people. “It’s more about the people than the photography,” he says. Over two decades in the wild have taught him that the real joy lies in helping others see nature differently. Teaching guests how to observe a subject, anticipate the right moment, and feel that connection before pressing the shutter – it never gets old.

“Photography is my skillset but I use my skillset to empower people to think differently about the natural world”, says Darren, whose conviction and respect for the wild have made him one of the most sought-after guides in the industry.
