Soul of The Satpuras

Come forth into the light of things let nature be your teacher
– William Wordsworth

What lends an element of surrealism to the Soul of the Satpuras, beyond its ambient wildlife, is an undercurrent of silent pride — echoed in the architectural grandeur of Jehan Numa Palace, the primeval stillness of Bhimbetka and Sanchi Stupa, and the colonial colonnades of The Imperial, sated with over 5,000 original artworks from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The tenor of royal finesse segues from Delhi to Central India, into the legacy of the Begums of Bhopal and the flavourful charm of Jehan Numa Retreat — where grit, tenacity, and gastronomical richness transfix those keen to unravel the mystique of Satpura’s soul.

The Soul of the Satpuras serves as a fulcrum where wildlife and culture in Madhya Pradesh thrive in tandem. Satpura National Park (Reni Pani Lodge) and Bori Wildlife Sanctuary (Bori Safari Lodge) — home to Bengal tigers, sloth bears, leopards, and giant squirrels — bring an untamed zest to this soul-stirring land, offering one of India’s most immersive wildlife experiences on a platter.

Timeless Flavours of Royal Cuisine

Nine meticulously designed sections, adorned with ancient temple pillars and evocative murals, embody the kernel of The Spice Route, where Ethnic Asian cuisine comes alive. Meanwhile, Jehan Numa Retreat celebrates a culinary heritage shaped by Bhopal’s Pathan community, where hunting inspires the bold, flavorful traditions of Mughlai cuisine.

Beyond Prime Predator Habitat

Besides iconic predators like the Bengal Tiger, Indian Leopard, Wild Dogs, and the Sloth Bear, it’s not uncommon to spot the smooth-coated otter sashaying across the Denwa River, which meanders between Satpura National Park and Bori Wildlife Sanctuary — located south of the Narmada River.

Atlas of Lost Worlds

Explore the remarkable Bhimbetka Rock Shelters, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled in the sandstone hills south of Bhopal, along with the Great Stupa at Sanchi, which dates back to the 3rd century BCE. Nearby, the Udayagiri Caves add another layer of historical intrigue — these rock-cut caves from the Gupta period (4th–5th century CE) are renowned for their intricate carvings of Hindu deities.

Day 3 - Day 5
BORI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Beyond the Familiar

The next three days are dedicated to exploring Bori Wildlife Sanctuary, with Morning and Evening Game Drives.

One of India's oldest protected forests, Bori offers a distinctly wild experience, with dense woodland, open landscapes and a rich variety of habitats. The sanctuary is home to an impressive range of wildlife, from Bengal tigers and leopards to sloth bears, wild dogs, gaur and an abundance of birdlife.

With time on your side, the emphasis is on slowing down and experiencing the forest as a whole. Read the signs of the wilderness, observe the changing light and allow each drive to unfold according to what is happening around you.

Bori is not simply a place to look for wildlife. It is a chance to experience a quieter, less familiar side of Central India's wilderness.

SATPURA NATIONAL PARK

Satpura is a wilderness of dramatic landscapes — forested hills, deep valleys, sandstone formations and the Denwa River — creating an environment that feels distinctly different from many of India's better-known tiger reserves.

The richness lies in the variety. Alongside its larger mammals, Satpura is known for its birdlife, smaller predators and the quieter encounters that reward those willing to slow down and observe.

Each drive offers a new perspective on the landscape, with the guiding team helping you understand the intricate relationships between the forest, its wildlife and the river that runs through it.

Notes

Darren Donovan was always drawn to wildlife. Growing up in the city meant he had little chance to experience it firsthand, but that never stopped him. He spent hours watching wildlife documentaries on television, captivated by the spectacle of the natural world and dreaming of being part of it one day.

When his father gifted him his first bird book on his eighth birthday, Darren couldn’t contain his excitement. He became so intrigued by birdlife, he would never leave his house without his trusty birdbook, curious to spot every species he could find.

Years later, that same curiosity led him to South Africa’s Sabi Sands, where he began his guiding career. It was there that he became fascinated by lion behavior. He still recalls one pride vividly that transformed within days of losing its matriarch. Just three days after her death, they hunted a buffalo for the first time. Watching them adapt so instinctively to survive changed something in him. That moment, he says, was when he truly understood the power of the wild.

For over 13 years, Darren lived in the bush, working in some of South Africa’s most renowned lodges. Inspired by the wildlife documentaries of his childhood, he picked up a camera, wanting to capture the same emotion and wonder he once felt on screen.

But for Darren, photography became more than just an artform. It became a tool to connect with people. “It’s more about the people than the photography,” he says. Over two decades in the wild have taught him that the real joy lies in helping others see nature differently. Teaching guests how to observe a subject, anticipate the right moment, and feel that connection before pressing the shutter – it never gets old.

“Photography is my skillset but I use my skillset to empower people to think differently about the natural world”, says Darren, whose conviction and respect for the wild have made him one of the most sought-after guides in the industry.
